The Story behind the Tree of Many Faces
New for 2025 is a re-imaging of The Tree of Many Faces on the east side of Fish Pond.
Situated close to the formal Cascades, in Fishpond woods, the Beech tree sits proudly in an elevated position with roots exposed and strewn over the bank, overlooking Gnoll Fishpond to the front and the cavity and ‘nook’ below to the rear.
At the start of 2025, a large cavity at the base and parasitic funghi throughout meant that our beloved tree posed an unavoidable risk to public safety. Following extensive surveys, the risks associated, including it’s elevated position and exposed root system left us no choice but to cut it back significantly.
This cherished tree, known to many as the Tree of Many Faces, due to its knurls and knots around the trunk, needed a new lease of life!
All of the material cut from the tree was retained and reused to sustainably create the features that you see today along the Tree of Many Faces trail.
